When moving in for a layup, push off from your weaker foot and lead with your shooting hand. When shooting right-handed, take off using the left foot. This way you keep your body away from defenders, your momentum going in the direction of the basket and your body stays balanced.
To improve your dribbling skills, practice dribbling with your weaker hand. You will be able to get past your opponent more easily if you can use either hand to dribble the ball. Don’t allow yourself to use your dominant hand when practicing. Soon, you will be able dribble with your weaker hand as well as you can with your dominant hand.
Your forearms and hands should be strengthened if you wish to handle the ball better. An exercise to help develop your basketball skills is to perform wrist curls. Don’t think you can just go somewhere on the court, catch a ball and then make a successful shot. Strength and flexibility in your hands will allow you to move the ball more gracefully and swiftly.
